Lorraine (Leah) Devorah Goldfoot nee Slifman

 Nadene Goldfoot

I bring you the sad news that Lorraine Goldfoot, cousin Nathan Bernard Goldfoot's wife, passed away in Assisted Living on March 3, 2026.  She had had many falls which may have done more damage than expected.

Lorraine (Leah)  was born on July 1, 1940 in Portland, Oregon, so was 85 years, 8 months, 2 days at death.  My father, Maurice Goldfoot, was also born on July 1st.  We found out much later when taking DNA tests that Lorraine and I were 4th cousins.

Lorraine's parents were Harry Shleifman/Slifman and Frances Stein.

Frances Stein Slifman  1913-2004

Frances Stein Slifman was born on March 8, 1913 in Portland, Oregon. Her family came to Portland from Odessa in 1910-11 and settled near her father’s family. A fruit and vegetable salesman, her father, Samuel Stein, eventually opened a grocery store in South Portland where she was raised in a complex, vibrant Jewish community, attended public school, and participated in a local synagogue and Neighborhood House. After working at a saleswoman in a downtown store, she met and married Harry Kolman Slifman in 1933 and became a housewife. She and her husband had three children: Gary, Lorraine, and Marv. Frances was a member of the South Parkway Club, the Sisterhood, and the PTA.

Lorraine told me how her parents danced a lot.  That was their passion.  They went out dancing.  Lorraine had huge black and white framed pictures of her family in her home.  She was very proud of her family.  Being I'm an amateur genealogist, I was proud of her having all these memories .

Thinking of My One and Only Bubbie This Morning and Cousin Donnie

 Nadene Goldfoot

My brother David, our Mom and cousin Don

This morning, I'm thinking about my family;  1st cousin, Don and how part of his youthful life was spent with our Bubbie, our grandmother Zlata Goldfoot nee Jermulowske/i.  Bubbie, or Hattie, a name on the census for her that I never heard in connection with her, was born in Lasdijai, Suwalki, Lithuania which was on the border with Poland.

What am I remembering?  Measuring my height against hers.  She was so short.  Bubbie eating her favorite;  boiled potatoes with pickled herring.

Orson Welles (arms raised) rehearses his radio depiction of H.G. Wells' classic, The War of the Worlds. The broadcast, which aired on October 30, 1938, and claimed that aliens from Mars had invaded New Jersey, terrified thousands of Americans. © Bettmann/CORBIS

Also, my memory goes back to being at the house when all of us were there and being told that the Martians had landed and that my father was going to drive us to the mountains to escape them. That was radio news of the moment.  All of the family were in shock and awe.  It could be we were together for Yom Kippur .

Aunt Hammie (Ann), our Bubbie and Cousin Harriett in about 1943-1944.  Harriett was born on June 25, 1941.

She immigrated to the USA as a teen-ager, around age 17 and arrived in the USA in 1903-I believe.  Zlata was born on January 11, 1886 and died December 9, 1950 in Portland, Oregon. She was the daughter of Joshua Charles "Hatzkel" Isaiahel Jermulowskie and his first wife, if my genealogy searches are correct, Esther   "Essie" Decatsky Decad Frank.  Being I have found a DNA match to a very nice man with the surname of Decad makes me think that this is correct.  Joshua's Essie died and he married again and gave Zlata more siblings.  Now, of course, Decatsky is not coming up on FTDNA for my checking but I did find this:  the 1940 U.S. Census.

Morris Decatsky was born about 1881 in Russia. In 1940, he was 59 years old and lived in Kings, New York, with his wife, Tillie, son, 2 daughters, and grandson.

As it turned out, Zlata never went to school as she was illiterate.  She couldn't read or write in any language, and only spoke Yiddish.  Evidence is that she was home as the baby sitter taking care of her siblings.  All of them did become literate.  There was from Esther  (Essie) ;   Bessie, Jennie and Louis of the 1st marriage, and then there was from Deborah (Dora);  Lilly, Charles and Alice of the 2nd marriage.  I've also found an unknown;  Abram Owsej Ajzykowicz Jermulowski who I wonder since born in 1898, if he's a sibling, too.  He was born in Bialystock, Poland.  Maybe he's a cousin.  Also, the tradition in Judaism is that when a wife dies, she is replaced with her sister.  Were Esther and Deborah sisters?  I need DNA tests to tell.  Most likely not.

Zlata's children include two PhDs with Don and his MS in the grandchildren with  most all being college graduates.  Don had gone on to be head of all the hospitals in Oregon except those in Multnomah County in their economic issues.  That was quite a responsibility.  He had to travel all over Oregon and check on their situations to keep them out of the red.

Don was the one who learned to really speak Yiddish with Bubbie.  He recalls favorite sayings with her to this day, part of the far distant memory that we all have.  We tend to remember the past but forget to take our pills in the morning.  If anyone heard Bubbie's favorite stories, it would have been Don, and he has told me a few.  He adores repeating the Yiddish he did learn from Bubbie.  It gives him his place in line with the Jewish people, if you can understand that.  Though his life didn't follow the Jewish culture as much, he did have that part of his childhood to remember.

Bubbie, as it was, lived with her last child, Ann.  Ann was born several months after her father,  Nathan Goldfoot,  had died in a horse and wagon accident in SE Portland.  He had the horse and wagon, given to him by a Jewish group who helped the immigrants provide a living for their family.  As it happened, he was not used to handling horses.  His peddler experience was by foot.  So one time the horse was frightened by a noise, came to a halt and this threw Nathan Abraham Goldfoot out of his seat and he hit his head, was knocked out and never did wake up again.  All this occurred on a Friday.  Bubbie did not find out till a friend came the following Monday and told her he was dead and at St. Vincent's Hospital.  She went through  trauma herself, Shabbat and pregnant with 3 babies and a missing husband.

Ann was born November 11, 1912 and her father had died July 19, 1912, 4 months before.  Can you imagine the state of mind that Bubbie was in?  She already had Charlie, Moshe (my father) and Essie-Elsie and had suffered earlier the death of her 3rd child, a boy-Abraham, who died in infancy at 5 months and 10 days in 1909, the year after my father's birth.  He evidently died of crib death though he slept with his parents in a feather-bed.

Ann married possibly the last Jew to leave Germany, Werner Oster, who got out in May 1939.  Germany entered Poland in June 1939.  It was not an easy thing for his family to get him out, either.  He had already been picked up and kept in Aushwitz just before it became the Holocaust center of death.  He was picked up for hitting a cow with a stick on the path to the slaughter house of his father's.  It was a stick used to keep them on the path, a leading stick-not a stick used to hurt the animal.  The Germans used any reason to pick up Jews. After a horrendous experience of torture, he was able to return home then.  But his family had to figure that he would be the only one to survive.

Ann had my 5 female cousins for Bubbie to care for as they appeared; Harriett, Darlene, Francis, Rose and Sandra.  They got to live with her and Don who was also there as a brother figure during several of the years.  His mother, Elsie, worked, and during those times, he was with Ann when not in school.

Werner on the right holding Darlene (2nd child) and my father on the left holding my brother, David.  Behind David's head is my mother's brother-Uncle Kenny holding Charlotte.  Cousins Diane, Harriett (1st child) and Donny and myself.  Don and I are 3 years apart.  I look so big and he so little, but as adults, he shot up and was a also a great basketball player, playing into his 80's in contests, even.  His grandson is even taller, I hear.  I love it that our family intermingled with each other, getting to know the other, as we children were born.  Children bind more than we realize.

Werner was under great stress all the time as a butcher with my father in that he kept tabs on his family through a radio receiver that was against the law to use as I understand it.  Imagine trying to lead a normal life when your parents and then 16 year old sister's lives were threatened and eventually taken, of course.  Though Werner had been a great athlete in his teen years, it was so hard on him.  That would have also been transferred onto my aunt Hammie (Ann) as well.

Life.  Even though we physically escaped the Holocaust, it left its mark on all of us Jews.  One wonders, wonders about what brought our Bubbie to America in the first place in 1903 and thankful, so thankful that it did.  I didn't even mention that she wound up in Council, Idaho, a little mountain town with some of her sibling members and new husband, Nathan.

She was even working washing dishes and such in a restaurant in Cuprum, Idaho.  Cuprum is an unincorporated community in Adams County in the U.S. state of Idaho. The community is located 27 mi (43 km) northwest of Council. Council is a beautiful spot.  Cuprum is Latin for “Copper,” an apt description as this remote part of Idaho likely still has huge untapped copper deposits. Several mines were in the area, leading to the need for a town. A hospital was built here in 1897, and a Post Office was established the same year on December 1st.  Cuprum is now a ghost town and hard to get to.   *Note* Two wheel drive accessible only in summer months. Kleinscmidt Grade is an historic road known for it’s steep grade.  From Ontario, Oregon head north on US-95 North for 44 miles. At the town of Cambridge Idaho, take a left on to ID-71.....How did she get there?  Probably by horse and buggy.

She was married in November 20, 1905 in Boise, Idaho to Nathan Goldfoot of Council, Idaho, where her sisters Bessie was married to Sam Criss and Jennie was married to Harry Criss and Louis Jermulowske was single and living in Council in 1901 or 1902.  He didn't marry until 1908 and that was in Portland, OR.  She probably lived in Cuprum, Idaho with her sisters, a small mining town close to Council before she married Nathan.  You should see the certificate!  The spelling was so bad that unless you knew the facts, you couldn't translate it.  Sheltered Zlata, suddenly being thrust into cowboy-land or gold-mining land;   cleaning up from them.

As a teacher, I laugh at the thought of my father and his brother Charlie diving under a bed to escape the broom attack of their mother in Portland.

Before Elsie was born, Charlie 4 and Moshe (Dad) 2, perhaps

Dad and Charlie were out  selling newspapers when dad was 4 and Charlie 6 to earn money for them all.  She was a teen-aged mom who was at the mercy of a 6, 4 and 1 year old and the broom was her only aid. The boys were even dismissed from Hebrew School for their antics.  Gosh, how did my father ever produce me,, the perfect school-child?  I don't know.  Must have been my mom's genes.

Dealing With Our Senior Goldfoot-Jermulowske Family Members

 Nadene Goldfoot

.

This baby is me, and I'm now a senior of 88.  Dad died way too young at 59.  His buddy was a pharmacist, and Dad had a dresser filled with vitamins.   Now that we're living longer lives, what do we do when we can't take care of ourselves?  Here's a history of what has happened to our family.  So far, we've been pretty lucky.  I'm still able to live alone.

Those of us who are lucky reach a senior age past 65.  That's when physical problems start to show up, regardless of what era you are living in.  Today's 2022 happens to find seniors in much better condition than in the past, but that is not a sure thing.  I've seen a lot of seniors live till almost 100 in the past in our genealogy.

Our paternal grandmother, Addie Zlata "Hattie" Jermulowske,  was born  on January 11, 1886 on a Monday in Lazdijai, Suwalki, Lithuania,  and died on a Saturday at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 28 days.  Lazdijai is 54" 14'N,  23"  31'E in Lithuania.  Also spelled as Lozdzieje and it is in Suwalki.    It is 4.3 miles from Poland's border.  For several centuries the territories of Suwalki, Lomza, and Trakai were part of a unified political unit in Greater Lithuania. After that, Suwalki and Lomza were together in the Duchy of Poland while a smaller Trakai was part of Lithuania.  Suwalki is the Gubernia.  Since WWI, Northern part is in Lithuania, southern part in Poland.  Lazdijai was partially in Poland, a major town. She had a hard life, immigrating from Lithuania to Washington and living in a wee little mining town first with her family further away in Council, Idaho.  She washed dishes at a bar/restaurant there at age 17 and she was so tiny.  Her legs were broken in a pogrom in Lithuania, stunting her height even more.

10/12/06  According to the marriage certificate, both Addie and Nathan lived in Council, Idaho when they married on 20 Nov. 1905.  Sam and Harry Criss were witnesses.  Other witnesses were C.J. Urdrick and Jamy (possibly Jenny) Criss.  D.J. Richardson was the JP that married them.  Frank E. Smith was the County Recorder.   She said she immigrated from Hamburg, Germany. on the vessel "Altverten" and said she was married.  That means Nathan and she came together though they married in Council, Idaho.  She arrived at New York City port in New York around 6th of May, 1903. (Think she didn't understand the question as she never learned to speak

 English.)

Ann, Bubba and Ann's first daughter-Harriett

Starting with  Bubba, my Dad's tiny, petite mother, Zlata (Addie, Hattie, Ettie) Jermulowske (1/11/1886-12/9/1950) ,  Bubba was a widow with 4 children by 1912  when she was only 26 years old.

1926 Portland, Oregon's South Portland with SE Portland

Her oldest, Charlie, married Helen and they moved to their own home.  My father, Morris, married Mom-Mildred and they lived with Bubba until they moved to SE Orange Street in Ladd's Addition, and then a few months later to their permanent home on Spruce Street.  Elsie married Al and Don, an important grandson, was born.  He would be a major help to Bubba as she lived alone at times by living with her.  Don learned Yiddish this way as that's what Bubba spoke.  Ann was left, and married Werner. They lived with Bubba, and  had 5 girls.

Ann and Werner's 5 girls were lucky to have had Bubba take care of them as they were living with Bubba until they moved to their home off of Hawthorne Avenue, the last to leave South Portland.  Ann (11/11/1912 died 9/19/1972 during the high holidays or just after of a heart attack, leaving Werner and her last daughter, Sandra.  The other 4 had moved elsewhere through marriage or work.  Harriett had married Bill in 1971;  Darlene married Bob in 1964;  Francis married Larry in 1965;  Rose married Art in about 1970, and Bubba had died on December 9, 1950 and Sandra was born in April 1949.  She was lucky to have been born while Bubba was still with us and doing well.  So Bubba spent her life living with her children.  Harriet( 6/25/1941-1/17/1999), the first daughter, has died at age 57 years  6 months  23 days from throat cancer.   Darlene (9/9/1942-11/11/2020), 2nd daughter  died at age 78 years  2 months 2 days.

Zlata's husband, our grandfather Nathan Abraham Goldfus/Goldfoot, was born on August 5, 1871in Telsiai, Lithuania and died in a horse and wagon accident 110 years ago where he was thrown out of his wagon and had hit his head on a Friday and never woke up and so died on July 19, 1912.   Zlata didn't know what happened as he hadn't come home for Shabbat.  A friend came and told her later.  He was buried on Sunday.

He died in  St. Vincent's hospital on Westover Road where it was in 1912.  His great grandson, Steve, would be a nurse in the new St. Vincent's hospital many years later.

According to my records, Nathan was only 41 years old when he died, leaving 2 boys and 2 girls alive.  His middle children Abraham, died when an infant. I figure he was named for an ancestor, the custom.
Me at Robinson Home with Alice Turn

Since Nathan died accidently, there was no decision to be made for his senior years, only how to survive without him.  He supposedly had money hidden in his stable for the horse, but Bubba never found it.  She was destitute and did not speak English and could not read or write in any language.  Luckily, she had a brother, Louie, in the neighborhood, and she had sisters, Bessie and Jenny, and half siblings Lilly, Charles and Alice.  In fact, I'm not sure if Louis was a full or half sibling.  I remember visiting with Jenny and Alice the most.  I think Dad (Morrie) knew Louis the best.

Zlata's first son was Charles "Haskel" Goldfoot (9/22/1906) in Council, Idaho.  and died 12/17/1949.  I remember my father driving there from Portland in the middle of December and bringing back my cousin, Nate.  Charles died at age 43 years 2 months 25 days from smoking.

Nathan Bernard Goldfoot with cousin Don Eichman at Center.

Nate just passed away 4/26/2020, born 2/25/1934 at age 86 years  2 months 1 day.

Dad was a pro boxer before becoming a butcher.  He kept his boxing gloves in a box in the basement.  He was Billie Meshke in the boxing world;  had a big poster with his picture, etc.  He was tough, a kid who was out on the streets selling newspapers at age 4.

My Dad, Moses (on the birth certificate) Morris, Maurice Goldfoot was born 7/1/1908 and died 7/23/1967 in Portland at age 59 years 22 days. He had some kind of attack and had died about 3 weeks later.  I think it was the liver from a former blood transfusion.

Mom, Mildred Elizabeth Robinson, was born 6/29/1913 and died 10/5/2005 at age 92 years  3 months  6 days.  I was living with her in Ontario, Oregon when she passed away.  That was the other end of his business as a wholesale meat dealer with Silver Falls Meat Packing Co.  They had a home there and kept the Portland home, too, where I spent all my life till I moved away.  It was in Ladd's Addition.

                                      Our family in 1947
william-ladd-oregon

Ladd’s Addition is named for William S. Ladd, who served as Portland’s mayor way back in the 1850s. He’s also known for founding Oregon’s first bank in 1859 as well as building the first brick building in Portland!

Believe it not, Ladd’s Addition was once a 126 acre farm, owned by William Ladd himself. In 1891, the city of East Portland became incorporated into Portland proper and the plans for creating a residential neighborhood named Ladd’s Addition began.  Our family moved there in 1935.

Mom had a stroke on a Saturday.  I was with her in Ontario, Oregon when it happened, so called the ambulance.  Luckily we were only a few blocks from the hospital.  She died on a Wednesday, the 2nd day of Rosh Hashana, several months later.  That stroke had wiped out all her memory, even that was the ability to read or know any of her family.  It came back, though.

Abraham, our grandfather Nathan Abraham Goldfus/foot's 3rd child,  was born about August 15, 1909 and died January 25, 1910, dying at age 5 months 10 days, probably of crib death. He slept between his parents in a bed with a feather mattress.

Elsie  was then born March 10, 1911.  She married Al on 2/3/1934.  Don was born in 1937.  Elsie died 6/8/1986 at age 75 years  2 months 29 days.  She died at the Robinson Home (for the aged) where she knew many of the people there.  Her son had been able to get her in there.  She, of course, was able to speak Yiddish as well as all of Zlata's children did, and had many Yiddish-speaking friends there during her life there.  Evidently all of Zlata's children had attended Commerce High School (became Cleveland later). Dad didn't graduate but quit to work (probably in the Kosher Meats store on Lincoln) to help support the family. He was working there when they were expecting me.   Elsie had been a Deli manager  and both she and Ann had worked for Mosler's Bakery making bagels when younger.

Ann Naomi Goldfoot was born  after her father's death on November 11, 1912, and he had died about 4 months earlier on July 19, 1912.  Here she's with her dog, Bonnie and the next, of course, was as a bride in 1939.

Ann and Werner Oster, a German Jewish immigrant,  married September 1, 1939.  I was the reluctant 5 year old flower girl.
She died September 19, 1972 at age 59 years  10 months 8 days, almost the same age as her brother, Maurice who died at 59 and 22 days. Dad only smoked a cigar occasionally, not cigarettes, like Charlie and Elsie.

I have a brother, David, younger than me, and I hope for his reaching 120 years as Moses had.  In fact, the Jewish "Happy Birthday Wish is that the person reaches 120 years.  Just think, 4,000 years ago the air was cleaner, and COVID didn't exist.  It was possible. If anyone reaches that marvelous age, I do hope it's done in good health.

Mom with Great Aunt Jenny(2/14/1882-4/2/1973) , Alice's sister.  My mom was 5'6" so the Jermulowske sisters  were quite short. In those days, women wore a hat and gloves when they went downtown.

Great Aunt Alice (4/16/1896-4/10/1990)  and Great Uncle Max Turn 12/1/1889-4/21/1986)  The Turns were close to us.

         Max Tern's grandfather, Saul "Shal" Turshinsky b: c 1845
My first real Passover was with them and Uncle Max did the whole seder, every word of it.  They moved into the Robinson Home in their old age.
I visited Alice there when first interested in our genealogy.  I believe Uncle Max had already passed away by then so this visit might have been in 1985.  This is an oil painting I did from a photograph they had.  He wasn't a rabbi but a Talmud scholar.

Nathan Abraham Goldfoot And His Children

Nadene Goldfoot
Nathan Abraham Goldfus (Goldfoot)
Nathan was born in Telsiai, Lithuania on January 1, 1871 and emigrated to England, then Dublin,  Ireland and finally landed in Council, Idaho after taking a ship from Ireland to Quebec, Canada.  In Council he met Zlata "Hattie" Jermulowske born January 11, 1886 in Lazdijai, Suwalki, Lithuania, which became part of Poland,  and they married on November 20, 1905.  Then they moved to Portland, Oregon with baby Charlie in 1906.  He died July 19, 1912 .  Nathan had a horse and wagon given to him by a helpful Jewish society.  He delivered goods in this wagon from the Willamette River to SE Portland.  One day the horse was spooked and ran, tipping over and Nathan hit his head and was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital.  It was the old one, not the new one that his great grandson, Steve Henwood has worked in as a nurse.  He died, not waking up, on a Friday, July 19, 1912.  In the meantime, his wife Zlata, 5 months pregnant, was most upset as she didn't know what had happened.  He hadn't come home for Shabbas and she was besides herself.  Finally, after he had passed away, his friend came and told her, and she was so upset, of course!  She cursed the man for not coming to her on Friday to tell her, and he died 2 years later.  Baby Ann was then born on November 11, 1912.  Nathan hadn't trusted banks, but hid his money, he told Zlata, in the horse shed.  She searched and searched but never did find it.

Their first son, Charles, was born there September 22, 1906.  He and his brother, Maurice, attended Failing Grade School in South Portland, which was near the Neighborhood House and the Gulch where Zlata raised goats for a while.  Then she worked plucking chickens.  Uncle Charles married Helen Hochfeld on July 11, 1929 in Portland, Oregon. Her folks had a big department store.    They moved to Grand Coulee, Washington in 1939  where Charlie had a clothing store and was a volunteer with their fire department.  Charlie died on December 17, 1949.  My dad, Maurice, drove up there to attend the funeral and brought back my cousin, Nate Goldfoot who lived with us for a while.  I remember my dad got us a 40 Plymouth and Nate drove us to school where he dropped me off at Washington High and he continued on to Benson High just beyond it.

Moses (Morris--Maurice Goldfoot was born in Portland on July 1, 1908.  He remembered sitting on his dad's lap who had a beard.  He loved playing on the baseball team at Commerce High but wasn't able to finish and graduate as he felt he needed to go to work to help support his mom and his 3 other siblings.  His parents had had a 3rd son born, Abraham,  in August of 1909,   who died when an infant in his parents' feather bed.  Since then 2 daughters were born; Elsie and Ann, the baby Anne born after their father's death 4 months later.  .Morrie met my mother, Mildred Elizabeth Robinson in South Portland where he worked in a butcher shop.  She was living with a Jewish family, the Gurions,  as their nanny.  She would walk by the butcher shop with her charges and he noticed her, talked and they dated.  They married on April 29, 1932.  I was born in 1934, 6 months after Charles and Helen's son, Nathan Bernard.
Eight years later, my brother, David  Goldfoot was born.

Elsie was born on March 10, 1911.  I remember that she worked in Mosler's Bakery, and so did Anne, her little sister.  The girls were able to finish high school.  Elsie worked with Al (Albert) Eichman at the bakery, and they married on February 3, 1934.  Don was born in November of 1937.

Anne Naomi Goldfoot was born November 11, 1912, after her father had died in the horse and wagon accident.  She met Werner Oster through my dad, Meshke since their uncle Max  had sponsored him, a German Jewish refugee, and got him a job with my father's new business of Lincoln Wholesale Meats across the street from the Lincoln Theater in South Portland.  Werner's parents had had a sausage market in Germany.  Werner got out of Germany in May of 1939 and went to New York first.  I have in my records that they married September 1, 1939.  I remember being the flower girl in their wedding.  We have the movie reel of the wedding.

Standing is Dianne Robinson, Harriet Oster and Donnie Eichman,
all my cousins and brother.  Taken before 1946 when Kenneth Robinson
was born.  Charlotte was born in 1942, so it must have been in 1944.
Gee, it was cool that we all got together with our fathers like this.
Cousins galore from Mom's side and Dad's side.

On the left is Rabbi Abraham Goldberg born in England who lived in
Israel.  He was the man who helped to steer me to Telsiai, Lithuania to find
our Goldfus/Goldfoot line.  He was slaughtered in a synagogue in Israel by terrorists.  It was after that when I was notified of his death that I had found out he was a rabbi.  He's connected to Stanley Goldfoot's line.
